🌍Why we love Greta: COP is the Conference of the Parties and it is sponsored by the United Nations to address climate change and devise ways for the countries of the world to adjust human behavior to prevent more global warming. Do you remember COP26 in Glasgow Scotland? That was when 18 year-old climate activist Greta Thunberg from Sweden spoke loudly and openly for so many people around the world. See AGREEN1 November 15, 2021 issue for more.
"How dare you!" Greta said numerous times in her speech that echoed around the world and made her a legend in her own time. Climate activists want to protect the environment from climate catastrophe, and they have established "Fridays for Future" as a collective time to raise awareness. This Friday, March 3, 2023 Greta and others around the world will be participating in another global climate strike. See Greta's Twitter for more information.

🍁California and $45 million for cannabis equity More than 78 jurisdictions, institutions, and businesses have benefited from California's Cannabis Equity Grants Program in the last two years. It is one of the programs created by California in 2021 to improve inclusion and equity in the cannabis industry, especially for those who have been most affected by the War on Drugs campaign. Over $30 million was awarded to jurisdictions in 2021 and $15 million in 2022.
The Governor’s Office of Business and Economic Development (GO-Biz) distributed the funds to 16 cities and counties in the state that applied for the grant in October last year. The state will also award the same amount under the program next year. It will start another grant solicitation in October.

🤑Billionaire investor Marc Andreessen's view on crypto The crypto market cap reached $1.13T on February 16. While still about 40% below its worth 3 months earlier, the current recovery lays new hope for investors like billionaire and venture capitalist Marc Andreessen, who believes 2023 could be the biggest year for crypto. Marc is a very experienced investor and the co-owner of the venture capital firm Andreessen Horowitz, (aka a16z) which oversees $28.8 billion in assets.
He was on The Lunar Society podcast recently, discussing issues around digital assets, capitalism, and education. Marc said he invests in crypto like other venture capital investments, with at least a five-year timeframe. “We treat these investments the same way we invest in venture capital equity. We buy and hold for as long as possible and focus on the underlying intrinsic value of the product or technology being developed.” He also defended NFTs against the common claim that they are valueless. He used “cultural importance” and “historical value” to explain how NFTs are similar to traditional art and photographs in value.
🎉Vegan option at Chick-fil-A Have you tried Chick-fil-A yet? The highly successful restaurant chain makes chicken sandwiches, waffle potato fries and chicken biscuits. We are happy to announce that a plant-based sandwich may also be coming to its menu soon. Chick-fil-A started working on the plant-based sandwich following requests from vegan patrons, and long before Impossible Foods and Beyond Meat launched their plant-based product. The vegan sandwich is made with cauliflower, which is high in fiber, vitamin B and other nutrients.
The restaurant chain started testing the plant-based product last week at its outlets in Denver Colorado, Charleston South Carolina, Greensboro North Carolina. Based on customers' reviews, the restaurant will decide whether to bring the plant-based sandwich fully to its menu across all its outlets in the country.
👗Sustainable fashion coming soon? Fashion weeks are exciting events. But behind the scenes, a lot of waste occurs. One 15-minute runway experience can take six months to create, and moments after the lights come up, the music stops, much gets tossed into the garbage: the paper invites, plastic water bottles, leftover food, and a lot more. The processes involved in making the clothing are mostly unsustainable too. Will the Fashion Week experience survive?
And then there is the travel. Buyers and designers emit so much carbon when they travel to international shows. Organizers of Copenhagen Fashion Week required all designers at the show to meet 18 sustainability standards set by the UN. They also tried to mitigate their carbon footprint by sending out invites digitally and banning single-use plastics on the show. It proved that the fashion industry could become sustainable. Eyes are now on the bigger fashion weeks organizers to see if they will adopt similar sustainability standards.

👑Miss Universe embraces sustainability Most models and fashion mavens have enjoyed the upside of fast fashion and synthetic fabrics. Because of those monetary benefits; they understandably avoid discussions concerning sustainability. The current Miss Universe, R'Bonney Gabriel stands out amongst her counterparts and truly represents others who have not been seen or heard.
The Texas native was crowned on January 14 in New Orleans, and she is a sustainability ambassador. As the first Filipina-American to be crowned Miss Universe, Gabriel designed and hand-crafted with natural dyes, a swimsuit cape she made using upcycled materials. She wrote a message on the cape: If Not Now, Then When? On her websiteshe says: By recycling more fabrics and reducing the amount of fabric scraps made during the production process, the more friendlier to our planet fashion can be. We agree!
